To me, this is the tragic story of the day and much more infuriating than the murder of Benazir Bhutto: A tigress in a zoo was killed for doing what tigers do.
The Siberian tiger killed Carlos Sousa Jr., 17, of San Jose, California, after escaping from its outdoor habitat, which is encircled by a 33-foot-wide (10-meter) moat and a 12.5-foot wall. Two brothers, ages 23 and 19, from San Jose were injured, police said.
Also note how the article clearly states that the tigress’s name was “Tatiana” yet uses the pronoun “it”.
Now they are “investigating whether there was human involvement in the incident”. You needn’t look for footprints, you geniuses. I can tell you that there was human involvement from the other side of the world. If you treat a predator like an exotic vase it’s no surprise if she shows you that she’s not.
“The fence was too low“, the zoo director said. “We should have been more cautious.” Not a word about the inherent cruelty of zoos. The fence was too low. My wife didn’t leave me because I hit her but because I didn’t lock her up properly.
Derrick Jensen says it all in the fourth premise of “Endgame“:
Premise Four: Civilization is based on a clearly defined and widely accepted yet often unarticulated hierarchy. Violence done by those higher on the hierarchy to those lower is nearly always invisible, that is, unnoticed. When it is noticed, it is fully rationalized. Violence done by those lower on the hierarchy to those higher is unthinkable, and when it does occur is regarded with shock, horror, and the fetishization of the victims.
